Common Insects and Pests Found in Lawns, Plants, and Grasses

Aphids

These common pests can cause huge damage to your lawn and garden.  You may have an aphid problem if you notice that your grass is starting to curl and has a clear sticky substance on the surface.  Insecticides need to be applied if an aphid infestation becomes overbearing.

Chinch Bugs

This insect is notorious for killing lawns in the heat of the summer.  Chinch bugs feed on turf by sucking the juices from out of the plants.  You can identify damaged areas by small yellow irregular patches in the lawn that grow as the insects spread.  Chinch bugs are most damaging in open sunny areas of yards.

Fleas

Lawns can harbor a significant number of fleas and infestations happen rapidly.  Fleas are parasites that feed on the blood of organisms such as cats, dogs, and people.  These wingless insects lay up to 50 eggs per day and are usually found on pets.  Using a flea treatment on your yard can prevent home infestations and keep your family and pets healthy.

Grubs

Grubs are the larvae of beetles and are a major complaint of lawn lovers.  Grubs live underground as they eat away at the lawns roots and often go undetected until it is too late.  Large brown irregular patches in the lawn are a clear indication of an infestation problem and requires special lawn treatments.

Japanese Beetles

The Japanese beetle is the most abundant lawn pest in Ohio.  These beetles feed on numerous plants and are responsible for killing many ornamental plants.  Additionally the larva of the Japanese beetle is the white grub, one of the most famous killers of lawns.

Spider Mites

Spider mites are common pest that cause damage to ornamental plants and shrubs.  Spider mite damage can be identified by spots on leaves of plants and eventually a bronzing of the leaf. These pests are difficult to see with the naked eye, but a large infestation can be spotted by the webbing that they leave behind.

Ticks

Ticks are small parasites that feed on the blood of other organisms.  They are often found in overgrown landscapes or sandy soils.  These parasites are known for spreading Lyme disease and are often picked up by dogs and cats.  Tick problems can be remedied by applying a special insecticide.
